Here is a quick comparison of the New 4th Gen Amazon Echo Dot and the 3rd generation. The 4th generation definitely got larger and so did its power adapter.

While I am not a fan of the new design, it does pack better sound. From what I have seen it does not seem to be a worthy upgrade over the 3rd generation like the 2nd to 3rd gen was.

My conclusion? if you have need better speakers - go for the 4th. If you value space and price - go for the 4rd generation.
