In November 2017, Abu Dhabi opened its own Louvre. The complex, located on Saadiyat Island in the Persian Gulf, was built by French architect Jean Nouvel. The new museum is not a branch of the Paris Louvre, although it is connected with it. Under agreements signed by the French and UAE governments in 2007, the Abu Dhabi project received the right to be called the Louvre for 30 years.
This opportunity cost 525 million euros, which the Arab sheikhs will have to pay over three decades. French specialists are helping to build the collection and train staff, and 13 French museums have loaned 300 masterpieces to the Louvre in the Desert, including works by Van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, Pablo Picasso and Leonardo da Vinci.
