The Butterfly Bush (Buddleja davidii) is a hardy shrub that is both evergreen and deciduous with cone shaped flowers that range in color from pink/white to dark purple, (Black Knight). Feed with bone meal in April and October, take care not to damage roots. Water on a regular basis and mulch to help retain moisture through droughts, (I find, once mine is established, even here in drought ridden California, it does well with occasional watering) Propagate from soft wood cuttings in spring and hardwood cuttings in the fall.
Problems: May get aphids, control with your favorite aphid spray. I find my BB is a spot where Praying Mantis' like to leave there egg pods, which make this a perfect natural control. Although not finding this in my books, I believe the roots can acquire fungal diseases that may cause root rot, control by planting in well draining soil and disturb the roots as little as possible.
