On 3 April, Hungarians voted for their next Parliament and Prime Minister. This was no regular election but a crucial moment that will decide the fate of Hungarian democracy. It could herald a change of guard, as a united opposition has emerged to challenge the incumbent. However, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and Hungary’s position as a bordering country will undoubtedly impact the election outcome.
At this online EPC Elections Monitor, the panellists discussed the results of the election and its implications for the future of Hungary within the European Union. Will there be a further escalation between the Hungarian government and the EU institutions due to the former’s violations of EU values? Depending on the election result, what will Hungary’s position towards the EU – and vice versa – be going forward?
