Did you know Boron Nitride (BN) is often known as ‘white graphite’?
Boron Nitride is a refractory compound and a hard ceramic material. With the chemical name BN, the material can exist in a variety of crystal structures, including hexagonal (h-BN), similar to the structure of graphite.
Besides the similar microstructure, Boron Nitride is compared to graphite due to its comparable lubricity, anisotropic properties, heat resistance and high thermal conductivity. However, it differs in having a high dielectric strength and low dielectric constant, along with a higher oxidation temperature.
Boron Nitride ceramic is often used in small components in plasma arc insulators, high temperature furnace fixtures and supports, as well as vacuum melting crucibles in electronic parts, such as heat sinks, substrates, coil forms, prototypes and low friction seals.
Boron Nitride Nanotubes (BNNTs), another allotrope of BN, represent a new class of nanotubes that provide another option to well-known Carbon Nanotubes. Goodfellow supplies BNNTs in powder form, with exceptional purities of 70% and 90%.
Overall, Goodfellow offers BN in several forms including tube, rod, sheet, powder and sputtering target.
