Released in 1968, "The Lion in Winter" was directed by Anthony Harvey and written by James Goldman, who based his masterful Oscar winning screenplay on his own Broadway play.
In 1183, Henry II (Peter O'Toole) throws a Christmas celebration at his castle in Chinon. He invites his three sons: John (Nigel Terry), Geoffrey (John Castle) and Richard (Anthony Hopkins). And he allows his wife Eleanor of Aquitaine (Katharine Hepburn) to leave the keep where she's imprisoned to join the party. Every member of the family will plot, conspire, double-cross and manipulate each other to decide which son is going to inherit the crown. The king of France, Philip (Timothy Dalton), and his sister, Alais (Jane Merrow), who's Henry's mistress, will also take part in the match.
The absolute best film ever made that takes place during Christmas time! With superb performances, an unforgettable Oscar-winning score by John Barry and a rich direction with inventive scope blocking and strong frames.
But, above all, "The Lion in Winter" has one of the greatest screenplays ever written, featuring non-stop acid witty sparring and one brilliantly cruel line after the other. This video (some kind of "dishonest trailer") is, more than anything, a tribute to Goldman's spectacular dialogue.
Merry Christmas!
