The Olympic Games ushered into the new millennium as Sydney stages the XXVI Olympiad from from 15 September to 1 October 2000, and it marked the second time, after Melbourne 1956, that Australia had hosted this sporting spectacle.
On that time, the 2000 Games stood as the most watched sport event ever. More than 3.7 billion people tuned in to watch, representing a 20% increase over the Atlanta Olympics four years earlier. Sydney 2000 was broadcast in 220 countries and generated more than 36.1 billion television viewing hours.
State broadcaster People's Television Network was the Philippines' official broadcaster (alongside ABC-5) for the 2000 Sydney Games. PTV-4 has been covering major international sports events, which includes the Olympic Games starting with Seoul in 1988 (airing along with RPN-9), up until the 2004 Games in Athens (under NBN-4).
