Why Belgium is about to break up !?
Not many of you know that Belgium is extremely divided, both linguistically and economically.
The French language is predominant in The southern part of the country, called Wallonia while the Dutch is the predominant language in Flanders, the northern part of the country.
But the difference in economy is much more pronounced.
In the second half of the 20th century, due to massive national investments in port infrastructure, Flanders' economy modernized rapidly, and today Flanders is much wealthier than Wallonia, being among the wealthiest regions in Europe and the world.
Splitting Belgium into two independent states, Northern Belgium and Southern Belgium, was one of the proposed solution to solve this discrepancy. This one being the most plausible one, while the most extreme one is that the northern part of Belgium to join The Netherlands and the southern part to join France.
