Mont-Saint-Michel is a beautiful, tidal island in Normandy, France. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has been attracting tourists for centuries.
The island is home to a Gothic-style Benedictine abbey, which is dedicated to the Archangel Michael. The abbey is the main attraction, but the entire site is worth exploring. The narrow cobblestone streets and steps wind their way to the top, leading visitors through the medieval village with its shops, restaurants, and cafes.
The origins of Mont-Saint-Michel date back to the year 708 AD, when a local bishop was visited in a dream by the Archangel Michael. The Archangel is said to have appeared to him three times, each time urging him to construct a place of worship in his name.
Over the centuries, Mont-Saint-Michel has been attacked several times, but it has never been conquered. It is even said that Joan of Arc was inspired by the resilience of the island, spurring her to join the battles against the English.
In the 19th century, after a stint as a prison, the abbey was restored and turned into a national treasure. Today, Mont-Saint-Michel is one of the most popular tourist destinations in France.
