STORYLINE
Two protesters injured in a violent weekend clash with police in Kosovo have died, United Nations (UN) police said on Sunday.
The two were among thousands of demonstrators marching on Saturday in protest over Kosovo's future status and a UN backed proposal that falls short of granting the province full independence from Serbia.
Riot police opened fire with rubber bullets and tear gas in the capital Pristina.
UN police commissioner Stephen Curtis said on Sunday it was regrettable that two lives had been lost as a result of the clashes.
He emphasised that police had been trying to restore law and order.
Police released the names of the deceased - 30-year-old Mal Balaj and 35-year-old Arben Xheladini.
Kadri Balaj, father of Man Balaj, said he was shocked to hear of the news of his son's death.
"I saw him last night in the hospital. After that KFOR took him away. I did not receive any news. Then I heard from the media, that my son is dead. I don't know what to say, I'm shocked," Kadri Balaj told Associated Press.
A further 70 protesters required medical assistance as a result of Saturday's protest. Eight were injured, including four seriously, police said.
Fifteen protesters were arrested and eight officers were hurt.
Kosovo has been run by the UN since mid-1999, when NATO (the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) launched an air war to halt the Serb crackdown on ethnic Albanian separatists.
The conflict in Kosovo left some ten thousand people dead, most of them ethnic Albanians.
Ethnic Albanians continue to push for statehood, eight years after NATO drove Serb forces out.
The latest plan, which needs approval by the UN Security Council in order to come into force, has been endorsed by Kosovo's ethnic Albanian leaders but rejected by Serbian officials in Belgrade who refuse to give up the province, considering it to be Serbia's historic heartland.
