The key to Tibet's cultural development lies in the integration of traditional with modern Tibetan culture, said experts on the sidelines of the ongoing Tibet Development Forum in Lhasa.
"The modernization we talk about is not to completely deny the traditional culture, but to integrate traditional with modern culture. In this way, the traditional culture can keep up with the times and find a way for development," said Zheng Dui, deputy director-general of the China Tibetology Research Center on Thursday.
Foreign experts agreed with Zheng and praised efforts of the local people to promote the Tibetan culture after watching the opera "Princess Wencheng" which tells the story of the marriage between a princess of the Chinese Tang Dynasty and a Tibetan king.
"What I also really appreciated is that I found out that a lot of local population was involved in the performance," said Jim Stoopman, program coordinator of the European Institute for Asian Studies.
The two-day Tibet Development Forum has brought together more than 130 delegates, with over half of them from outside China. They are expected to offer suggestions for Tibet's future development.
The forum is scheduled to end on Friday.
