Pokémon Legends: Arceus represents for Game Freak both a step forward and also an unyielding resistance to innovation. The Pokémon game franchise has largely settled--getting by on doing the bare minimum to reap massive praise from critics and undiscerning consumers. Ultimately, Pokémon Legends: Arceus showcases a trend-chasing and, frankly, embarrassing foray into the open-world genre where technical issues, awful storytelling, and shallow game design drag the title leagues behind its open-world peers like Breath of the Wild, MGSV, Witcher 3, Ghost of Tsushima, and others which Arceus desperately and impotently tries to emulate. I'm a big fan of Pokémon but I am not a fan of this. To me, it either suggests a commitment to the lazy, rushed cycles of recent Pokémon titles or a severe lack of talent and inability to properly acclimate to the modern video game space. The Pokémon franchise is stuck in a bubble.
