The Shim-Sham-Shimmy is a light choreography known by tap dancers around the world. It is named after the first step, which consists of: the Shim-Sham.
The Shim-Sham was born in the United States in 1931, in the middle of the swing and jazz club era. It was customary to end variety shows with this short choreographic piece, which was known by all the stage artists and sometimes staff members of the club or theater would also join in.
The term "Shimmy" was added to the title because it evokes the trembling shoulders called "the shimmy", performed in the first step of Shim-Sham by the chorus girls of the time.
Initially composed of ultra-well-known steps, which were part of the repertoire of the era, the shim-sham comes in countless variations but always follow the same basic pattern, which allows all dancers to interpret their version without bothering other participants.
The Shim-sham is constructed as follows:
First chorus:
- The Shim-Sham
- The Push-and-cross-step
- Tack-Annie
- Half-Break, Full-Break
Second chorus (= the FREEZE CHORUS)
- The Shim-Sham
- The Push-and-cross-step
- Tack-Annie
- Half-Break, Full-Break
One reason for the success of this dance lies in the second chorus (called the FREEZE CHORUS) because the dancers and musicians stop and stand still for the duration of the breaks, creating a surprise for the public but also spontaneous laughter if one of the dancers continues to dance while the rest of the group freezes...!
FR :
