Initially thought to be an exclusive adult condition, venous thrombotic events (VTE) have now been recognized in children, occurring mostly in the hospital setting (i.e., 1:200 admissions). Similar to what happens with adult patients, VTE in children can also be accompanied by significant morbidity and mortality and hence, their appropriate recognition and treatment is mandatory. Nevertheless, the paucity of strong evidence-based recommendations, the distinct profile of underlying conditions, and the potential longer cumulative anticoagulant exposure time when adolescents receive long-term anticoagulation require specific considerations that both paediatric and adult treaters responsible for their care need to be aware of. This presentation will summarize the most relevant clinical aspects pertaining to the care of such patients receiving DAOCs.
