So let’s discuss the use of formulas when calculating the loss in value after a vehicle has been wrecked. There are appraisers out there using a formula method to determine a dollar figure on how much value a vehicle has lost. Please be aware, that using a formula where you plug numbers in and out comes a figure, cannot in fact objectively determine a vehicle’s true loss in value. A reputable Diminished Value appraiser will base his findings on a methodology that can be substantiated. For example, if they use this formula for a 2016 Mercedes S550 and then use the same formula for a base model 2012 Chevy Silverado – no accurate valuation comes from it when these vehicles are not even in the same class and do not depreciate at the same rate.
