The Zumwalt-class destroyers are some of the most ambitious warships in the history of American shipbuilding.
The railgun, weaponized lasers, and the most advanced supersonic missiles are just a handful of the capabilities that were predicted to be on this ship. Even today, however, the fleet has yet to find a clearcut purpose for it.
So then what was the main obstacle for Zumwalt, exactly? Was it the ambition or rather the high cost?
