Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is named after the founder and ruler of the UAE (from 1971 until his death in 2004); the Grand Mosque is also his final resting place.🕌🙏🏻 He wanted to build this grandest of grand temples as a symbol of peace, love and tolerance.🕊️😍 It wouldn’t just be a place for Muslims to come and worship, but also where visitors would be welcome to come and learn about Islam.🌍
Entry is free but tourists should register their visit beforehand on the mosque’s website. Pop your details and estimated time of arrival into the online form, and you will be given a QR code to show at the entrance when you arrive.📱Alternatively, you can get this QR code in the underground shopping mall which leads directly to the entrance of the mall🐾
Even guided tours are free and are available on a walk-in status.☝🏻
The Mosque is open from 9am to 10pm, apart from Friday, when the schedule is different🕗 The holy month of Ramadan may also affect the schedule so make sure to check it online before you go☝🏻
Dresscode👗: full body coverage is required of women — ie. ankle length trousers/skirt, head coverage, nothing too tight.❌ Also nothing transparent for men❌ There is a handy guide on the mosque’s website that will give you a better idea of what’s acceptable outfit. Note that it also gets quite hot in Abu Dhabi, so dress accordingly and know that you’ll be hotter in the full coverage. 🥵 Before COVID there was a possibility to rent abayas at the entrance but now you can only purchase them (it’s cheaper to buy one in the underground shopping mall in front of the Mosque)💲
Lastly, enjoy the beauty of the Mosque because it’s truly impressive😍 Apart from Swarovski crystal chandeliers✨, it boasts the largest handwoven carpet in the entire world, holding World Guinness Records🌟, and the building itself can hold 40,000 worshippers.😱 It took over 3000 artisans from around the world to complete this masterpiece; that kind of crazy level of collaboration reminds me of the Sagrada Família, only that construction is still in progress.😬
