The evening of September 3, 2020 found us alongside the South Shore Line, not so much looking for passenger trains, but for freight. Contrary to popular belief, the normal times for freight movements are fairly straightforward.
First, we see AF5 with both of the railroad's SD38-2s heading east for Bailly with traffic from the railroad's west end. This includes lots of steel traffic from the BRC, as well as a few "shorts" from Burnham Yard.
Next, we head quite a bit further east and catch AF6, the nightly "Midwest turn" that moves nothing but coils from US Steel's Gary Works to their Midwest Plant in Portage. Leading the train is CSS 2008, which has a rather strange (but still cool) RS3K on it. If you enjoy notched out EMDs, this train is certainly for you.
After chasing AF6, we waited around at the station for quite a while into the night, where we caught PF9 - one of the railroad's Pool Freight crews that can do just about anything, with a loaded coal train off of the CSX at Miller, bound for Burns Harbor. Two nose to nose CSX GEVOs are power.
