This episode of Double Tide Adventures we explore Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth,Maine and look over at The Ram Island Ledge Light Station.
The Ram Island Ledges are a series of stone ledges, some of which break the waters at the southern end of Casco Bay. In 1855 an iron spindle was erected to protect sailors from these dangerous underwater ledges. The ledge continued to be the site of repeated shipwrecks.
Portland Head has long protected Portland and the adjacent area. Cape Elizabeth residents were deeply committed to American independence from British rule. In 1776, the new Town of Cape Elizabeth posted a guard of eight soldiers at Portland Head to warn citizens of coming British attacks.
