Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser (God save Francis the Emperor) was the imperial and national anthem of the Austrian Empire and later Austria-Hungary. It was written in 1797 by Joseph Hayden, as an ode to Austrian emperor Francis II. It’s tune has later gone on to become the national anthem of Germany.
