Voter suppression is a political strategy used to discourage specific groups of voters from registering or voting in elections, therefore influencing the outcome of an election. Candidates, parties, state election agencies and others have been accused of the practice, which includes tactics like forcing voter ID laws, closing neighborhood polling places, restricting the hours available for early voting, making mail-ballots harder to get or purging lists of eligible voters. These tactics overwhelmingly impact people of color, senior citizens, the poor, disabled and sick and college students.
