As per A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide)-Sixth edition, there are 49 processes to manage 49 processes logically, 5 Process Groups and 10 Knowledge Areas. These 5 Process Groups are:
- Initiating
- Planning
- Executing
- Monitoring & Controlling
- Closing
If we think of doing anything, everything comes under PDCA (Plan, Do, Check and Act)
1. Plan: Analyze the requirement and plan it
2. Do: Execute as per your plan
3. Check: Review, analyze the results, and identify what you’ve learned.
4. Act: Take action based on your analysis and learning.
Then replan.
Now all the planning processes come under “Plan”. Execution means implementing it or doing it. Monitoring and Closing come under “Check”. To do the planning, implementing and checking, you need to do some starting activities; this comes under initiating processes. So, you move to the next phase after 10-15 rotations of this cycle of Plan-Do-Check-Act for a given phase. To move to the next phase, we do closing processes. Individual processes in the Process Groups are often iterated before the completion of the project or phase. These groups are independent of the application areas like marketing or industry focus like construction and telecommunications.
