STORYLINE
Pakistani lawyers continued street protests on Thursday calling for the restoration of democracy and the ouster of President Pervez Musharraf ahead of crucial parliamentary elections scheduled for 18 February.
Armed security officers stood by as hundreds of lawyers and their supporters marched through central Lahore chanting "Go, Musharraf, Go".
"Our struggle is for the restoration of democracy and for the reinstatement of the judges. We want to bring our country back on the track and this struggle will continue until all the judges are reinstated, until the time the judiciary is restored," said lawyer Ayesha Malik.
In November, Musharraf purged the Supreme Court - which was poised to block his recent re-election by a compliant parliament - and briefly suspended the constitution, setting back expectations of a restoration of democracy.
"We are fighting for liberty, freedom and the independence of the judiciary," said Mansuf Khan, a senior lawyer.
Protesters burned an effigy of President Musharraf.
The top court's chief justice remains under house arrest, along with other prominent judges and lawyers.
