« Isn't their survival more important than your pride? »
« Pride? Fuck my pride. This isn't about that... You're a good lad, truly you are, but if you can't understand why I won't enlist my people in a foreigner's war, there's no point explaining. »

When Mance refused to bend the knee in season 5 I remember feeling confused and angry; how dare he pretend this isn't about his pride? How dare he preach about his love of his people when he's condemning them to death? However, only after seeing how hard the North fought for - and continues to fight for - their freedom and independence, do I fully understand Mance and his motives - and I think this is similarly how Jon feels. You can see a look of realisation on his face when Daenerys says the same words he once said to Mance. It got me thinking about the similarities between Jon and Mance, and thus this video was created.
Personally, I believe the same words were intentionally used to showcase the evolution of Jon as both a person and a leader. It's just a theory, but I believe that after the cave scene, Jon began to think about Mance, and everything he did right, as well as everything he did wrong. Just like Ned and Robb, Mance was a good man but ultimately made mistakes that got him killed, which made Sansa warn Jon before he left to be smarter than them. All three of them refused to bend the knee and lost their lives for it, a fact which Jon is well aware of. He knows the mistakes they made, and he knows he cannot repeat them if he wants to save his people and the realm.
