When the Israel-Hamas conflict broke out a month ago, Russia was uncharacteristically reticent in its early response, sending cautious statements urging calm and a cease-fire.

Russia Attack US Base Near Israel!
Russia's initially quiet response to the onset of upheaval was perceived as the Kremlin carefully balancing its competing and conflicting interests in the Middle East.
Russia has traditionally enjoyed strong relations with Israel, with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu communicating frequently and promising to improve Israeli-Russian ties.
However, Russia has grown increasingly close to Israel's arch-enemy Iran in recent years, and it has been even more reliant on Tehran since its invasion of Ukraine in 2022, relying on the country for weapons, especially drones, for use in the conflict.
In this background, when the Iran-backed militant group Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, killing over 1,400 people and kidnapping 240 others, Russia was obliged to choose between openly criticizing Hamas and backing Israel.
However, as time has passed, Russia has grown increasingly critical of Israel's military action, particularly when it begins to step on its own toes — that is, its own interests and alliances — in the region, such as the launch of strikes on Russia's ally Syria, a country in which Moscow has military bases and whose leadership it has supported.
According to political analyst, author, and academic Mark Galeotti, Russia "is now in a situation where it's harder and harder to maintain that kind of equipoise," noting that Russia determined that its relations with Iran and fellow oil producer Saudi Arabia were more strategically and economically valuable than its relations with Israel.
"When it comes down to it, Russia truly needs Iran, not least as a continuing source of military hardware, but it also needs Saudi [Arabia] because the two of them can, to a significant extent, influence world oil pricing." In such circumstances, it is necessary to sacrifice Israel."
Russia's stance has shifted gradually but drastically in recent weeks, as it became clear that the crisis is harming its military and geopolitical objectives.
In response to a series of missile attacks against Israel, Israel launched airstrikes on various military sites in Syria in October, causing Russia's Foreign Ministry to declare that the raid violated Syria's "sovereignty and international law." Later that month, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov described the strikes as "reprehensible."
