While this guy was mountain climbing, he got stranded and ended up with severe frostbite. Unfortunately, all four fingers on his hand had to be amputated. You see, frostbite happens when you're exposed to extreme cold for too long. It starts with your skin turning pale or red, and if not treated quickly, the affected areas will turn blue or black as the tissues inside freeze. While severe frostbite will mostly require amputation, it’s still treatable if caught early. But using direct heat to warm the area will actually make it worse. Instead, soak the body part in warm, not hot, water for 15 to 30 minutes until it softens and returns to its normal color.
