Psalm 37:4 seems to imply that God will give us what our hearts desire. Is this what is being communicated in Psalm 37? How does this verse apply to the Christian life? Dr. Josh Philpot presents these questions to Dr. Richard Caldwell as they sit down for another episode of the Straight Truth Podcast this week. In this discussion, they seek to help us understand Psalm 37:4 in light of the surrounding verses and how the principle of the verse applies to our Christian walk.
Dr. Caldwell says that first, we want to ask what the Psalmist desires in Psalm 37. Before we take any passage of Scripture and apply it to ourselves, we need to understand it first in its context. He shares that the Psalm reflects a desire for vindication. In it, we see desires for God’s glory, for the righteous to be vindicated, and for evil designs to be thwarted. This is the context for Psalm 37:4.
After we have looked at it and understood it in its context, we can take the principle and say that God satisfies the desires of His people when they trust Him. However, we would still have to say that those desires God will satisfy are righteous, godly, and biblical desires for people submitted to Him and His Word. Are His aims my aims? Are His desires my desires? When God's desires become ours, those desires will ultimately be fulfilled because they are His desires.
Is it possible to ever say with confidence, regarding a desire in our heart, that we know the Lord has given it to us? Dr. Caldwell suggests caution here; without Scripture, this way of speaking makes him nervous. We need to examine all our desires and decisions by the Scriptures. We want to be in prayer and even seek counsel from pastors and elders in the body of Christ. We should be able to reach a place of neutrality that if God willed for us to go to the left or to the right, we could do either with joy.
How can we reconcile Jeremiah 17:9 that speaks of the heart being more deceitful than all else, with the things our hearts desire? Dr. Caldwell explains that he sees this passage as speaking of the unregenerate heart of the natural man, an unbeliever. Yet, as Believers, he says, we need to have the humility that recognizes that more can be going on in our hearts than we are aware of. We don’t want to be overconfident in the judgment of ourselves. This is why bringing others into our conversations about making decisions is helpful. As Believers, we can say that we sincerely want to please Christ. So we want to examine the Scriptures, ourselves, and our motives as best we can. We want to reach out to others who love Christ and want to help us walk well with Him. Our desire may be good, our motive right; the desire does not violate Scripture and is permissible. But, this does not necessarily mean that we should or even have to follow through with the desire.
