The FAA released a preliminary report about a deadly plane crash in Chatham County. The plane was found to have engine issues. The plane crashed at 12:50 p.m. on Friday near the Siler City Municipal Airport at 80 Aviation Drive, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). A preliminary FAA report reads the "aircraft experienced engine issues and crashed into trees and caught on fire." On Sunday, State Highway Patrol identified the victims as flight instructor McMillan Abernathy, a certified flight instructor for Executive Flight Training, and student Justin Strauss.
According to Broadcastify radio traffic, emergency crews found the plane on fire in the woods near the airport. A report released by the FAA on Monday could provide insight on what caused the plane to crash. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said the plane that crashed was a Piper PA-28-140, which can either seat two or four people.
Experts say this type of aircraft has a good reputation and competes with Cessna as a plane for training. WRAL News spoke to aviation expert James Crouse, who has studied more than 500 flight crashes over more than 40 years. According to Crouse, the small plane is often used for pilot training.
