Once off SH1, the mountains on the horizon were enticing. Strong winds buffeted the van & the clouds appeared to be building from the south, a forewarning of devasting rain much further on, that would fall later that night & the next day in many places in Southland & Otago regions, including Queenstown & Gore.
It's a "must do" to have one of Fairlie Bakehouse's pies & equally so to pay a visit to the amazing collection of yesteryear's treasure trove of old items in and outside the buildings at Burkes Pass, formerly known as Three Creeks, an historic town first settled in 1859, at the gateway to the MacKenzie Country.
After the gentle climb through Burkes Pass ... next stop - Lake Tekapo.
