The independent report suggests an Australian-style scheme championed by Boris Johnson and Michael Gove could cut net immigration to under 100,000 a year without hitting the public finances. The conclusion from influential experts appears to torpedo claims by David Cameron and George Osborne that leaving the EU would put the pensions of millions 'at risk'. Today's report on pensions came from the National Institute of Economic and Social Research on behalf of the independent Institute and Faculty of Actuaries. They found that simply capping numbers at this level would create a £7.7billion-a-year black hole in the pension system by 2057.
