Japan is planning to dispatch its largest warship to the South China Sea for three months of operations starting in May.
The aim is reportedly to test the capability of its Izumo helicopter carrier by sending it out for what Reuters described as Japan's biggest show of naval force in the region since World War Two.
The addition of the warship comes amid growing tensions across Asia over the ongoing South China Sea dispute.
After departing in May, the warship will train with the U.S. Navy in the South China Sea.
It will then join the Malabar naval exercise in the Indian Ocean in July to train with ships from the U.S. and India,... before returning to Japan in August.
Japan's Maritime Self Defense Forces declined to comment.
