The Investment Tax Code, approved by Decree-Law No. 249/2009 of 23 September 2009, created the tax scheme for the non-habitual resident(NHR) in terms of Personal Income Tax (IRS), in order to attract to Portugal nonresident professionals that are qualified in high added value or intellectual, industrial property or know-how activities, as well as beneficiaries of retirement pensions obtained abroad.

🗣7 common misconceptions about NHR:
1) If I receive salary from abroad, its tax free in Portugal.
2) When the NHR is approved, I am guaranteed to get 20% flat rate.
3) If I receive the NHR, I have to use it for 10 years.
4) I can apply for the NHR any time after my arrival.
5) Having the NHR means I don´t pay any taxes.
6) NHR stands for Non-Habitual Resident. So, I am not a resident in Portugal.
7) I want to have the NHR guaranteed before I move to Portugal.
