Cardioversion is a procedure used to restore the normal rhythm of the heart. If you have persistent atrial fibrillation, which means you're in AFib continuously, a cardioversion may be performed followed by the use of medications to maintain normal rhythm. Cardioversions can be performed if we are trying to understand if symptoms you may be having are related to Atrial Fibrillation. However if we have symptoms that we are certain are related to AFib, we don't necessarily have to do a cardioversion before considering other treatment options such as ablation.
