Well, well, three days after my birthday, I got the huge celebration of seeing Metallica for the first time! I couldn't have asked for more.
Let me take you back in time with the kings of metal. I believe it was around 2003 when I accidentally heard Metallica. I didn't know the band's name at the time, but I remember seeing them with an orchestra and thinking, "Hmm, interesting," but I didn't pay much attention as I wasn't into guitar music at that point.
A few years later, in 2006, my friend, Bassem, was experimenting with different music genres, and he properly introduced me to Metallica. All it took was watching one particular music video, and that one was "One."
I remember watching "One" and having my mind blown away. The sheer brutal look of James Hetfield in black and white, the way Kirk Hammett played the guitar, the camera showing him transitioning across the fretboard, and suddenly going from a clean tone to a heavy distorted tone and then playing that solo, which was unlike anything I'd ever heard. All these points were just enough for me to say two things:
- What the hell was that?
- How do I play like that?
From that moment on, after listening to and discovering Metallica, I decided to get an electric guitar right away. It happened the following year, in late 2007, when I got my first electric guitar (because of Metallica), and since then, I've been playing and covering their songs all the time.
Listening to their music and learning to play the guitar was a huge turning point in my life. Playing an instrument gave me the confidence to deal with people and made others take me seriously because of my playing. Their songs have helped me in various ways, and after all these years, I can't think of any band that means as much to me as they do, nor can I think of any other band whose discography I know by heart like theirs.
I've always dreamed of seeing them live but never thought it would happen. Yesterday, this dream came true. For that, I'm grateful and will always encourage others to keep their dreams and hopes alive, for one day, they might achieve them.
Thank you for everything, Kirk Hammett, James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, and Robert Trujillo. 🖤🤘
