Some observers of European politics compare Britain's attempt to leave the European Union to Catalonia's efforts to secede from Spain.
Its former president Carles Puigdemont told Sky News: "We hope that both sides can do their best - to achieve a good deal which is in all of our interests - in Catalan's interest to see the European Union committed to the fundamental values, fundamental rights and find an agreement with the United Kingdom."
The 55-year-old is accused by the Spanish authorities of rebellion and misuse of public funds following an unauthorised referendum last year on Catalonia's independence from Spain.
2.2 million people in Catalonia voted in that referendum with a majority in favour of independence on a turnout estimated at 40%.
