2023 Minnesota whitetail deer opener!

It's been a few years since I've harvested a whitetail deer at the off grid cabin but that changed last weekend! Even though we'd had some nice bucks on the cameras leading up to the opener, my son Hunter and I decided that we would take the first opportunities we had to fill our tags. Up North it can be common to not fill a tag or even see a deer the entire season. Between hard winters, wolf predation and other factors, deer harvest opportunities can be feast or famine.

This year was a feast year! After I shot the doe right away on opener we decided that if there was an opportunity to fill the second tag early in the following day we would take the first opportunity. My son wanted to complete the processing and quartering by himself for the first time and this would allow time before he had to return to college.

Some people will wonder why we did not wait for a chance at a buck. Antlers just aren't important to me. Sure it would be fun to harvest a big buck but hunting is a means to provide clean organic healthy food for the table. Taking the sure thing is more important to me than passing up an opportunity waiting for a chance for a big buck that may never show. A bird in the hand as they say. So now the freezer is filled and it's time to get out the grinder and start making brats and sausage and canning up all that food that was grown and harvested on my land.
