On September 14, 2022, Typhoon Muifa gathered strength as it headed toward the Chinese metropolis of Shanghai. Heavy rain and strong winds was reported in the city of more than 20 million people.
The local observatory classified it as a severe typhoon with maximum sustained winds of 155 kilometers per hour. The city was put on "red alert" and more than half of the scheduled flights from Shanghai's two main airports were canceled.
Authorities in Shanghai warned that strong winds and torrential rains were expected until Thursday. China's busiest container seaport was also expecting waves of up to 5 meters.
Muifa is expected to hit land close to the city of Ningbo, just to the south of Shanghai. Ningbo and other nearby cities also canceled flights and ordered tankers to remain anchored during the storm.
The national weather forecaster said there was a high risk of flooding of small and medium-sized rivers in parts of Zhejiang.
Local media reported that Muifa was the strongest typhoon in the Yangtze River Delta in a decade, which experts said was caused by unusually hot weather and high temperatures in the East China Sea.
