STORYLINE:
A number of shops were looted in Sasolburg in South Africa's Free State on Monday as angry residents of the nearby Zamdela township protested municipal demarcation plans.
The protesters pelted police with petrol bombs and rocks and set tyres alight in an effort to block the main road.
Police were able to restore calm after bringing in reinforcements from Bloemfontein.
A number of protesters were arrested.
Local media said the township residents have been angered by plans to merge Sasolburg with the Ngwathe municipality.
The residents fear that if approved, the merger would land them with the municipality's financial problems, the media reported.
