In Paul’s first letter to Timothy, he continues to lay out the requirements for men and women who desire to serve in the church. In order to have a strong church, its servants must cultivate faithfulness to God in their daily life and in service to the church. This faithfulness includes caring for each other… being careful to preserve order in the church… contributing not only by service, but also in tithing.
Deacons likewise must be men of dignity, not double-tongued, or addicted to much wine or fond of sordid gain, but holding to the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. These men must also first be tested; then let them serve as deacons if they are beyond reproach. Women must likewise be dignified, not malicious gossips, but temperate, faithful in all things… but in case I am delayed, I write so that you will know how one ought to conduct himself in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and support of the truth. — 1 Timothy 3:8-11, 15
And coming to Him as to a living stone which has been rejected by men, but is choice and precious in the sight of God, you also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. — 1 Peter 2:4-5
