Vassily Brandt (1869-1923), First Concert Piece in F minor, Op.11 (c.1910)
Max Sommerhalder, trumpet - Mario Venzago, piano
Concert Piece Op.11 by the legendary Russian-German cornet virtuoso Vassily Brandt, principal trumpet with the Moscow Bolshoi Theater, was first recorded by Joe Wilder, the famous jazz trumpet player. The present recording, made in 1979, arrived second. The piece was originally intended for cornet but the only version known at the time of this recording was an American edition for trumpet. In post-war Europe, the piece had fallen into complete oblivion and nobody played it. This might be one reason why the protagonists of the present recording ventured to modify the piano part here and there, adjusting Brandt's somewhat homespun harmony to the more advanced idiom of the time when he published the piece and embellishing redundant passages the way a baroque or jazz performer would have done.
