Norwegian soprano Sissel Kyrkjebø performing "Shenandoah" with Irish musician Paddy Moloney and Swedish musician Kalle Moraeus at a TV-concert in Drammen Theatre, Norway in 2001. Moloney died on 11 October 2021, aged 83
Sissel is widely regarded as one of the finest and most talented sopranos in the world. A crystal clear voice.
Shenandoah is an American folk song, dating to the early 19th century.
The lyrics may tell the story of a roving trader in love with the daughter of an Indian chief OR of a Union soldier in the American Civil War, dreaming of his country home of the Missouri river OR of a pioneer's nostalgia for the Shenandoah River Valley. In Sissel’s version of an Indian chief’s daughter. The song is also associated with escaped slaves. They were said to sing the song in gratitude of the river. Lyrics were added and subtracted over time as with many good songs.
This song is one of my favourites along with the movie “Shenandoah” starring James Stewart (1965)
