We all cannot do our best every time; just in case you wonder what will happen If you fail a subject in a Canadian Institute (College/University), this is what's going to happen.
Let's consider a real-life scenario; in my college (Conestoga College), passing marks are 55/100, so if you get 51-54, you will fail a subject, but you will be eligible to give a supplemental exam.
What is a supplemental or supplementary exam?
A supplemental exam is a secondary exam for the same subject you fail but remember, not all subjects offer supplementary exams, and you need to pay extra for supplemental exams. Also, in the supplemental exam, you can only get maximum as passing marks. I mean by that is, if you score 100/100 in the supplementary exam, you will still get 55/100 in that course, as passing marks were 55/100.
The fee for supplemental in Conestoga College is $25-100 per subject. It can vary for your course and institute. If you get below 1-50 marks out of 100, you will not be eligible to give a secondary exam (Supplemental Exam), but you must repeat the subject. It depends on the number of failing students the institute will offer during the semester, next semester, or even next year with the new batch. The fee for repeating a subject in Conestoga College is around $1800-2500 per subject. It can vary for your course and institute. Some subjects are prerequisites for the upcoming subject, so if you fail any subject which is a prerequisite for any upcoming subject, you need to pass the subject first to get the forthcoming subject.
What are the Prerequisite subjects?
A prerequisite course ensures that students have the prior knowledge required to be successful in subsequent studies. Before students enroll in a course, they must meet the prerequisite requirements established by their college/university.
For Example, suppose you have Economics in 1st semester and Advance Economics in 2nd semester. In that case, there is a bright chance that to take Advance Economics in 2nd semester, you need to pass the first-semester economics, as the subject in the first semester is a Prerequisite for the subject in the second semester. Also, passing marks can vary from institute to institute; universities usually have 70/100 as passing marks, and prerequisites vary from degree to degree, so just read out your program requirements accordingly and apply these concepts.
