The lesson begins with the chord shapes needed to play the verse: A, C#m and D. I show you some tips for switching into that barre chord, which includes barring the A chord with one finger. That way, your hand will already be in the correct position for the transition into C#m. We practice our verse progression using downstrokes only and counting along just to make sure we can switch with the rhythm.
Next we take a look at the strumming pattern, which is pretty basic (luckily because every other aspect of this song is definitely a little bit more challenging than usual). We work out the pattern and then we put it together with the progression from our verse, and do a slower play along.
Next we'll take a look at the chorus, which is going to require a couple new chord shapes. As long as you play E/G# the way that I show you it shouldn't be too tricky. We go through the chords, and then there's a little rhythm thing with the staggered vocals. I teach you how to count through it all, even if you're not going to be singing it you still need to know what's going on so that you can come back in at the right time with the rest of the chorus!
The end of the chorus has its own thing going on, we break it down, it's not too difficult when you look at it in chunks. And then we play through the entire chorus together.
Finally we take a look at the intro, which is pretty straightforward. It uses a technique called double stops. Rather than look at it like a bunch of TAB, I want you to realize it's all based around a single shape. Just knowing about it will help you notice the patterns in the intro, and it will make it a lot easier to both practice and memorize.
Once we've taken a look at the intro we put the whole thing together playing through the intro, verse and chorus. From here you would simply play the verse and chorus four more times and that's the entire tune!
See you next time!
