02:34 My Thoughts
Berberine is a bioactive compound found in various plants such as European and Indian barberry, goldenseal, and Oregon grape. It has a long history of use in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine. Berberine has gained attention in recent years for its potential health benefits and therapeutic properties. Studies show berberine lowers blood sugar levels because it augments GLP1. This is similar to how drugs like Ozempic work. Studies show berberine also reduces cholesterol and other research hints berberine may prompt weight loss. If you take any medications or are having surgery, speak to your doctor and pharmacist about you using berberine.
Key Points
While most studies show berberine is safe, some should take precautions.
Berberine should be avoided during pregnancy and nursing infants.
Speak to your doctor first if you have had weight loss surgery.
Berberine may interact with supplements that lower blood sugar, including cinnamon, chromium picolinate, alpha lipoic acid, magnesium, and Gymnema Sylvestre.
Berberine appears to lower blood pressure in animals. Thus it might interact with other natural hypertension supplements, including melatonin, black seeds, arginine, beetroot extract, and L-citrulline.
Berberine may also interact with diabetes medications such as metformin, Ozempic, and sulfonylureas.
