Ingrid Paulus, Head of Transport and Environment, AUDI AG talked to me at the 2010 Challenge Bibendum.

There are cities in the world that have synced their stop lights to the stated speed. It makes sense. If the speed limit says 25 mph, I should be able to go 25 mph through my city without hitting a stop light. This would encourage me to go the speed limit and would save me gasoline because I wouldn't have to stop and start as often.

Imagine your car being able to talk to cars in your neighborhood that could tell you what speed your car should go in order to not have to stop at a stop light.

Ingrid Paulus, Audi AG was at the 2010 Challenge Bibendum and showed me through her NAV system that a system is being developed that allows cars to share information with other cars for just that type of information.

What if you're coming up to a stop light that is red? Should you coast up because it might turn green, or do a full complete stop because it just turned red?

Through technology in other cars you will know how many seconds are left before that stop sign turns red.

Information can be distributed about accidents, road work and weather.

The cool thing, there would be no monthly fee. It would work off a 5.9 Ghz system. Once the hardware is purchased the system, says Paulus, would be free of charge.

And energy efficiency would improve. If Audi puts their start-stop in their automatic engine and syncs with the traffic signal the engine could shut down on a long stop. This would be better than utilizing stop-start every time you stop and start.

Even better, this system could be retrofitted to older cars, so that everyone that drives can receive the most intelligent information. Follow us on:
