Nutritional medicine is the use of evidence-based, nutritional, therapeutic approaches, such as whole food diets that focus on the reduction or elimination of inflammatory and aggravating food groups, supplementation, herbal preparations, and other non-drug modalities to address a host of issues including chronic diseases and select autoimmune conditions, and help clients achieve their best possible wellness state. Nutritional medicine establishes the scientific basis for the use of diet, vitamins, minerals, trace elements, essential fatty acids, amino acids, other metabolites, and herbs to address both major and minor health concerns. When used properly, nutritional interventions are safe and very rarely cause any serious side effects. Virtually non-existent are the tradeoffs or list of warnings necessary when following many drug treatment protocols.
This course provides an overview of nutritional medicine, a nutritional perspective of the pathophysiology of chronic disease, a nutritional approach to inflammation and immune regulation, macro and micro nutrients, the importance of the gut including the gut-brain connection and the ever increasing role a healthy gut microbiome plays in the healing process and prevention of disease, nutrigenomics, and nutrigenetics.
