An audiobook reading of Chapter 2 of Dune by Frank Herbert. This chapter introduces the direct antagonists of House Atreides, the Harkonnens. The Baron in particular is bickering, vainglorious, and gormandizing, yet there is a compelling Machiavellian incisiveness to his machinations against the Atreides. We, as the readers, know the Harkonnen plan and its likely devastating effectiveness before we get to know the quite likable members of House Atreides: they remain unaware of the specifics of their doom in a use of dramatic irony that lends the events to come a sense of tragic height and inevitability.
