In this video, we will discuss different elements of movies, phrases native speakers use to describe movies, as well as some lesser-known movie genres.
Movie Elements
plot: the events that make up a storyline.
plot twist: a very big change in the expected storyline of a movie
scene: a part of a movie containing one activity in one location
credits: a list of the names of the people who helped make a movie
adaptation: a type of movie that was adapted (changed) from a play/book/etc
sequel: a movie that continues the story of another movie
prequel: a movie that tells the events that occurred before a particular movie
trilogy: a group of three similar movies
subtitles: words that translate the speech of a movie into another language
closed captions: the spoken words of a movie written as text—usually for the hearing impaired
premise: the main idea of a movie
protagonist: the main character of a movie
antagonist: an important character who opposes the protagonist
trailer: a short video with clips from an upcoming movie that is used for advertising
Words and Phrases Used to Describe Movies
flop (v): perform terribly or worse than expected
overhyped (adj): describes a film that was given more praise than it deserved
raunchy (adj): describes a film that is very sexual in nature—possibly in an offensive way
gory (adj): describes a movie with lots of blood and violence
tear-jerker: describes a film that is sad and makes people cry
to be on the edge of one’s seat (v): to be extremely interested in and paying full attention to a move
to push the envelope (v): to go beyond what is expected; take a risk by trying something new or different
instant classic: a film that is very good at the time it is released and will most likely be regarded as a classic
critically acclaimed (adj): receiving a lot of praise from movie critics
star-studded (adj): describes a movie with many famous actors and actresses
box office success: describes a movie that many people bought tickets to see
Movie Genres
Western: a film set in the old American West
indie: a film that was not made through a major film studio
apocalyptic/ post-apocalyptic: a film about the end of the world or destruction of the world
coming-of-age: a movie that revolves around a child growing up/learning a lesson/becoming wiser/etc
slasher: a film that shows people being killed in violent ways
chick flick: a movie that appeals to women
parody: a movie that imitates another movie in a humorous way
