STORYLINE:
Tayeb Abdel Rahim, a senior aide to Yasser Arafat, told a news conference in Ramallah that the ailing Palestinian leader's health deteriorated on Monday night and early on Tuesday morning, and that he has a blood haemorrhage in the head.
Later on Tuesday, the Palestinian Executive Committee held an emergency meeting to discuss the Arafat crisis.
In Paris, the Palestinian Foreign Minister Nabil Shaath said Arafat's major organs were still working and firmly ruled out any suggestion of removing the 75-year-old Palestinian leader from life support.
His remarks underlined that the Palestinian leadership was now in control of information about Arafat's condition after days of confusing and often conflicting reports.
Palestinian officials had been denied access to the Palestinian leader by Arafat's wife, who used France's strict privacy laws that give authority to the family.
Back in the Gaza Strip, Palestinians reacted with grief at the news that Arafat's condition had dramatically deteriorated, some crying as they watched the news.
And in Jerusalem there was jubilation amongst right wing Jews about the demise of Arafat.
