With bariatric surgery being a semi elective procedure and so much of the success depending on the patient’s willingness and ability to follow their postoperative dietary and exercise changes, there are many myths out there. In this episode, Drs. Teixeira and Ghanem discussed the top 10 (+1) myths about bariatric surgery and explain why they simply aren’t true. Check out the list of myths below:
You can’t get pregnant after weight loss surgery
You can’t do anything about your hanging skin after weight loss
You will lose your teeth
You’ll be vomiting all the time after surgery
It’s all about diet and exercise, not surgery
Bariatric surgery is dangerous
I’ll become an alcoholic after bariatric surgery
Bariatric surgery is the easy way out
You need to lay still to recover after bariatric surgery
You’re going to regain all your weight
You should measure success in weight lost
The fact is that bariatric surgery is the best and only sustainable weight loss option for those suffering from morbid obesity. With advances in surgical technique and technology, bariatric surgery has never been safer or more effective than it is today. Unfortunately, because of many of these myths, only a tiny fraction of patients eligible for bariatric surgery actually have it, leaving millions of patients with often debilitating obesity and in a frustrating spiral to heavier and heavier weight.
